DOVER, N.H. (AP) – A city woman was rushed to the hospital after she was struck by lightning in her backyard.

Fire and rescue crews found Virginia Mentel unresponsive when they got to her home shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday. They revived her and raced her to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, where she was in serious condition Sunday afternoon, a nursing supervisor said.

The season’s first major thunderstorm caused several small fires, scattered power outages and downed trees around the state.

In Meredith, a home caught fire after a lightning strike. A house in Rochester also caught fire, but an off-duty firefighter put out the blaze with a garden hose.
