LOWELL, Vt. (AP) – A memorial service is planned Wednesday for a 10-year-old boy who was shot while cleaning guns.
Police said Ryan H. Langmaid was cleaning firearms in a bedroom of his home with his teen-age brother Friday evening when one of the guns went off.
“Investigation indicates that the victim died as a the result of a wound from a shotgun that was dropped and discharged,” said a report from the Vermont State Police.
Ryan had been handling the weapon, police said.
The older brother reported the 7 p.m. shooting, and went to a neighbor’s home for help.
The home belongs to the boys’ parents, Randy and Tonya Langmaid.
Ryan Langmaid was a fifth-grader at Lowell School, which will remember him with a moment of silence at its Christmas concert Thursday.
and with a formal dedication, perhaps of new playground equipment, in the spring, said Principal Scott Boskind.
“He was a beloved member of our school community, to myself personally and the teachers; he was a dear precious child,” said Boskind Tuesday.
Boskind said Ryan’s brother, now a tenth-grader at North Country Union High School, also attended Lowell Graded School, which has 102 students pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
Boskind knew both brothers and called the older “a very stable, loving child.”
A memorial service was scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday in Newport.
