Weather forecasters say another model February snowstorm will slide into Maine on Sunday night, dumping up to 18 inches of slush in Oxford and Franklin counties.

The Lewiston-Auburn area is expected to get 8 to 9 inches.

“Simply because the atmosphere has warmed up a bit, February is when you start seeing the heavy, wet snows,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Hayes. “And it’s moreso in March. So if you like wet snow, you’re in the right place at the right time.”

Hayes said a heavy storm blanketing the Great Lakes region on Saturday was expected to move into Cape Code on Sunday afternoon.

“We’re expecting it to redevelop Sunday night and begin moving northeast into the Canadian Maritimes by Monday morning,” Hayes said. “That’s a pretty usual track for this time of year.”

The storm should dump the most snow inland, with a chance of rain along the coast.

“Down along there, we could see as little as 3 to 6 inches, before it turns into rain,” he said.

The storm should move out of Maine by Monday afternoon, with sun predicted later that day. Things could freeze up again Monday night, Hayes said.
