A state licensing board disciplined two medical professionals this week for drug-related violations.
The Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine put Dr. Michael Bell, whose office is in Lewiston, on probation Tuesday. In an agreement, Bell will remain on probation for five years and pay a $1,000 fine for diverting medications and using opiates. He must undergo substance abuse monitoring and can only work at board-approved practice locations, a written news release said.
Bell said he had diverted medications that were supposed to go to his patients. He also altered a prescription written by another doctor, he said.
In an unrelated action, the board suspended the license of Ronald Kessler of Gray, a physician assistant. The board reviewed information alleging that Kessler had been writing prescriptions without a valid Drug Enforcement Agency registration. He also failed to respond to the board’s questions. The board concluded that Kessler posed an imminent danger to the public, the release said.
A hearing on his suspension is expected to be held in January.
