LEWISTON – Yes, there are still burritos in Lincoln Street’s future.
Jon Patrick Levasseur, owner of Patrick’s Burrito Bistro and Deli, said Wednesday he planned to keep his popular restaurant open in the same area of downtown, even if he has to take a few months off to relocate.
“I want to stay here, in this area,” Levasseur said. “I have good neighbors and I think I fit in well.”
City councilors Tuesday ratified the city’s plans to purchase the four-story building at 87 Lincoln St. with plans to demolish it. The building is home to Levasseur’s restaurant and a few renters in the upstairs apartments.
City Administrator James Bennett said the property had been auctioned off by the bank after being taken in a foreclosure. The city’s winning bid for the building was $115,000, with another $14,000 set aside to relocate the building’s occupants, including the restaurant.
Bennett said Tuesday he hoped to have everyone moved out of the building within 60 days.
“We don’t want to have to heat the building over the winter,” Bennett said.
Levasseur said he knew the city was planning to take over the building and that he’d have to find a new home. He was surprised to learn he’d be looking for a new address so quickly.
“I kind of figured that they’d let everybody stay in place over the winter,” he said. “Sixty days, that’s going to be a little difficult to arrange. I guess I’ll have to take another job for a few months.”
He opened the deli in 2006, specializing in Mexican entrees, deli sandwiches and desserts. Moving so soon would be both good and bad, he said.
“I’m impatient to change things and I’m ready to take this to the next level,” he said. He doesn’t know if he’ll be able to do it by himself, financially.
“It may involve finding a partner,” he said. “Every day, I see new faces come through my door. That says that things are going well and word-of-mouth is spreading about me. I’ve established my menu and I think my neighbors like having me here.”
City officials said Wednesday they had no specific plans for the property.
“It’s just an area the council wants us to focus on,” said Lincoln Jeffers, Lewiston’s assistant to the city administrator. “They’d like to see some growth in the area, and this parcel came up as part of an auction. So, we’re just land-banking this parcel right now, setting it aside for the future.”
Councilors on Tuesday also purchased a larger lot with a vacant warehouse at 75 Lincoln St., three addresses north of the restaurant.
