Since a Sept. 24 story about his daughters’ efforts to have him removed from the New Gloucester home that he built, Omer Morin received numerous phone calls, notes, cards and letters, all offering support.
“People I don’t even know, from out of town, Windham, Topsham, called,” Morin said.
He was even invited to dinner by strangers moved by his story.
“I was very surprised,” Morin said. “I never thought I’d get that reaction. Five nursing homes called me. They said, ‘We see that here with older people. Their children just forget them or take their money away.’ Well, I’m not finished.”
Morin plans to return to his Florida home soon, and he has no intention of doing what his children have ordered.
On Sept. 24 we reported that Morin and his wife signed, but did not read, a trust his daughters had drawn up. When his wife died in 2007, Morin discovered his children had legal control of his assets. His message to others: Read what you sign, or get a lawyer.
In a letter from their lawyer, the daughters told Morin he had to leave the New Gloucester home by Sept. 9 or he’d be charged with criminal trespassing.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office visited Morin but determined there was no legal reason to evict him. Morin said he hasn’t heard from his children since Sept. 9.
“There’s been no more letters.”

Baby Evelyn has arrived
On Nov. 10 we published a “Couples: How we met” story about Steve and Katie Caron of Sabattus and how the young couple dealt with his deployment to Iraq. Their photograph featured their son, Jack, Steve and a pregnant Katie.
Katie is pregnant no more.
The baby, Evelyn Fern Caron, was born Nov. 12. Katie’s labor started just as she finished her day at work and Evelyn was born later that evening. She weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 21 inches long.
Mother and baby are doing well. “She’s beautiful!” Katie gushed on Friday.
