NEWRY – Maine Handicapped Skiing needs volunteers to teach alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing to children and adults with physical disabilities.

Handicapped Skiing is Maine’s largest year-round adaptive recreation program providing programming at Sunday River, Sugarloaf, Sunday River Inn and Cross Country Center and Pineland Farms.

Every year more than 400 volunteers share their interest in winter sports. No prior experience in teaching is needed. Volunteers must be intermediate skiers or riders, have their own equipment and be at least age 18. MHS provides training and lift or trail passes for volunteers. Volunteers sign up for three days of training before the season starts and then volunteer for 10 days during the season, January through March.

MHS also needs volunteers for administrative, fundraising and photography as well as snowmobile drivers. It also hosts a junior volunteer program for those who are age 16 and 17. The multi-week program introduces teens to the types of disabilities served and the adaptive equipment used by skier and riders.
