Kyle Hall, regional engineer for the Maine Department of Transportation, looks over the slope failure to a 170-foot section of Route 136 near the Auburn/Durham town line on Thursday. Hall said the slope failure was probably caused by erosion from the river over a period of time. The failure was reported late Wednesday and Maine DOT workers and contractors were on site making repairs to the road Thursday morning. Damage was to the north bound lane heading into Auburn. A new, temporary lane is being constructed so that northbound traffic can use the southbound lane and southbound traffic can move to the new lane. The new lane was scheduled to be paved Thursday night and traffic on Route 136 is expected to return to normal by late Friday. The DOT plans to repair the damaged section, but it must wait until the area stabilizes, a spokesman said, and that will depend on weather and river conditions.
