LEWISTON – Eleven stolen handguns are off the streets while three others remain unaccounted for after police arrested a man in connection with a pawn shop break-in.
One man was behind bars while another was being investigated as the probe into the Aug. 27 burglary at a Lisbon Street pawn shop continues.
Troy Bradley, 18, of St. Croix Street, was arrested Friday night on charges of burglary and theft in connection with the break-in at Pine Tree Trading Post last month.
Police said the case against Bradley will likely be taken over by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms, one of three federal agencies that assisted with the probe.
Bradley was arrested after police and undercover agents spent more than a week saturating the downtown and investigating the thefts.
When Bradley was arrested, police said 11 of the 14 stolen handguns were recovered. The value of the stolen weapons was estimated at $12,000.
Police said they have identified a second suspect in the break-in and they expect that person – and possibly others – to be charged soon. Police also hinted that they know where the remaining three guns are.
“We are confident that the remaining firearms still missing are not in circulation so as to pose a threat to anyone,” police spokesman Lt. Michael McGonagle wrote in a statement.
Shortly before midnight on Aug. 27, a witnesses told police that someone had smashed a window out of the Pine Tree Trading, went inside and then fled the building with a pack full of goods.
A local person chased the suspect for a short distance before losing him on Park Street, police said. Several officers were on the scene moments later and they searched for the suspect on foot, in cruisers and with the help of tracking dogs.
The suspect was not found that night or the following day, but police said they immediately began to develop leads. Over the following week, police officers and detectives were joined by agents from the Central Maine Violent Crimes Task Force, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force and the ATF.
Police said the case against the second suspect, who was not identified, will be presented to the Androscoggin County grand jury when it rises in October. Bradley remained at the Androscoggin County Jail on Wednesday on $4,000 cash bail.
