100 Years Ago: 1918

Maj. James Moriarty of Lewiston will be elected colonel of the new 3rd Maine Regiment, National Guard at the meeting of the commissioned officers at Augusta, Thursday evening. It was learned here Wednesday that several persons who have announced themselves for office in the new regiment are ineligible to serve. Section 74 of the National Defense Act provides that a person eligible for service in national guard must be an officer or an enlisted man of the National Guard, or the reserves or unassigned list of the National Guard, or an officer, active or retired, of the U.S. Army, Navy or Marine Corps or a graduate of the U.S. military force and naval academy, or a graduate of a school, college or university where military science is taught under the supervision of a regular Army officer.

50 Years Ago: 1968

For the first time in the area, a cheerleading camp will be conducted under the sponsorship of the YWCA, which will be held Aug. 18 through Aug. 22, at Camp Chittenden at Tripp Lake, directed by Miss Andrea Anastasio. Registration is limited and any girl interested may contact the YWCA, 73 Pine St., Lewiston.

25 Years Ago: 1993

AUBURN — The Androscoggin Organic Growers are meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for dessert and a tour of George and Ruth Benjamin’s organic farm. All are welcome. There will be an opportunity to discuss plant varieties appropriate to the Maine climate as well as organic farming practices used on the farm for building healthy soil conditions, control of infestations, weed control and crop harvesting. The Benjamin Farm is on River Drive (Route 136) south of Auburn on the Androscoggin River, just beyond the power line and before Durham on the right. Bring your questions and a friend interested in organic gardening and farming.
