SABATTUS – A New Hampshire woman may have escaped with nothing more serious than broken bones after a serious crash on the Maine turnpike Sunday afternoon. But she didn’t escape without an OUI charge, according to the police.

Elizabeth Drolet, 24, of Nashua, N.H., was charged with operating under the influence following a Sunday evening accident.

Trooper Lee Vanadestine with the Maine State Police said that Drolet was southbound on Interstate 95 Sunday at about 6:20 p.m. when she lost control of her 4-door Chevrolet, hit a guardrail, flipped on the hood, skidded across the emergency lane and then rolled into a ditch about 100 feet away from the initial site of the crash.

Vanadestine said that Drolet was wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident. She was transported and admitted to Central Maine Medical Center after emergency crews from Sabattus and United Ambulance had to extract her from the wreckage using the Jaws of Life.

Vanadestine added that several witnesses reported seeing Drolet driving erratically moments before the crash and driving at speeds well above the posted 65-miles-per-hour speed limit. He said that speed and alcohol were definitely suspected as factors in the crash.
