AUBURN – Police late Tuesday were searching the area of Lake Street and Park Avenue where more than a dozen people reported hearing gunshots.

Emergency dispatchers began receiving calls at about 9:45 p.m. More than an hour later, no source for the sounds was found.

Police said several people called from Park Avenue, Lake Street, Gamage Avenue and Nottingham Drive. Callers reported hearing a succession of explosions that they believed to be gunfire.

One woman said there was a flurry of what sounded like gunshots, a pause, and then several more from a distance.

“It sounded like somebody was shooting from a car and driving away,” she said. “They were loud shots. We had the TV on, the air conditioner and everything else and we heard it. We jumped right up.”

Police were examining homes in the area, searching for damage or signs of trouble.

They were also patrolling areas around Gamage Avenue in a search of suspicious vehicles.

By 11 p.m., it remained unclear what had caused the sounds or precisely where they had come from.
