LEWISTON – The Lewiston Police Department is seeking applicants for the Citizens’ Police Academy, which offers insight into how and why the police do what they do and helps explain the misperceptions often brought about by the Hollywood version of policing.

This year, the academy will cover topics such as operating under the influence and traffic enforcement, domestic violence, child abuse and police dogs.

Crisis counselor Laurie Cyr-Martel will discuss the police role in dealing with emotionally disturbed people. She has many years of experience dealing with crisis situations and has written a book on the subject.

Also, participants will learn about investigating a crime scene and take part in a mock crime scene in which they will be responsible for solving the crime. Those involved will also deal with deadly force using computer simulation.

The academy will begin Feb. 6 and will run for 12 weeks (scheduled to end on April 23). Meetings will take place every Wednesday from 6 to 8:15 p.m. at the Lewiston Police Department. Those interested are asked to fill out an application, which can be obtained from the department Web page at www.Lewistonpr.org, or by visiting the Lewiston police lobby at 171 Park St.
