LEWISTON – A New York man nicknamed “Animal” was arrested on a federal drug charge here Monday.
Rannik Williams, 23, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was tracked to a residence at 45 Marble St. by agents working on a tip, police said.
They found Williams with about 100 grams of crack cocaine that had an estimated street value of $20,000.
Williams, who also was arrested on a local outstanding warrant charging operating a motor vehicle after suspension, had been acquitted recently on a second-degree murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of his half-brother in front of a New York building where the two lived, according to published reports.
Williams was charged with the federal offense of possession with the intent to distribute. He was in federal custody Tuesday night at Cumberland County Jail in Portland. He appeared in U.S. District Court in Portland on the charge Tuesday afternoon.
“It’s just another example of people coming up here from out of state to sell drugs,” Lewiston police Chief William Welch said.
He said the arrest was the result of local, state and federal agencies working together, including the Drug Enforcement Agency, High Intensity Drug Trafficking Agency, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and local police.
Welch said the recent activity isn’t a sign that the city is suffering a setback in its efforts to control the flow of drugs.
It means new coordinated efforts among various law enforcement agencies have paid off, he said.
