What: New Gloucester selectmen

Tax rate
Issue: Selectmen set the 2007-2008 tax rate at $10.20 per $1,000 valuation.
The scoop: Assessor Nancy Pinette’s report states the town must raise $4,463,355 by taxes. The money pays for SAD 15, Cumberland County assessment, Pineland Tax Increment Financing plan and an overlay fund that is offset by $2.7 million in revenues.
Up next: Bills will be mailed to property owners this summer and are due by October.
Society request
Issue: The New Gloucester Historical Society’s request to lease a town parcel in Lower Gloucester was tabled without action.
Up next: The board wants to review a lease being drawn up by the Historical Society before taking action.
Water studies
Issue: Selectmen are funding water studies with Drumlin Environmental, LLC of Portland to find a suitable site for a future public water system to serve the Upper Village area.
The scoop: Town Planner Rebeccah Shaffner said Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection is working with Upper Gloucester residents who have gasoline-contaminated water in their wells and has joined the town’s water study efforts. Shaffner said the DEP will fund 50 percent of the cost of a public water supply to Upper Gloucester as a remedy to contaminated water caused from underground gasoline storage tanks leaking in Upper Gloucester during the 1980s.
