LEWISTON – The winner of the Maine spelling bee misspelled a word during the second round of the national competition taking place this week in Washington, D.C.
Klaas Pruiksma, a sixth-grader at Montello Elementary School in Lewiston, won the Maine bee in March by correctly spelling “wasabi” and “melancholy.”
On Wednesday, he misspelled “raisiny” in the 80th annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, according to a posting on the official Web site. He spelled it “rasiny.”
