Few Lewiston-Auburn residents are going to the polls early to vote for next month’s statewide bond issue.
Lewiston City Clerk Kathy Montejo said she finished collecting absentee ballots from the city’s four nursing homes on Thursday. She still has only collected 75 absentee ballots. The Lewiston Clerk’s office collected 690 absentee ballots for January’s special mayoral election.
“They’re not exactly knocking down our doors for absentee ballots,” Montejo said.
Auburn City Clerk Mary Lou Magno said she’s collected 78 absentee ballots so far.
“But we don’t expect a big turnout,” she said.
Voters statewide will go to the polls on June 12 to decide on two bond issues. One would provide $112.9 million for transportation projects, including bridges, airports, ferry and port facilities, roads and trails. The second would pay $18.3 million for drinking water programs and wastewater treatment facilities.
Polls are open in Lewiston-Auburn from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Both cities have consolidated their polling places for this election. Lewiston voters will go to the Multi-Purpose Center at 145 Birch St. Auburn voters will go to Auburn Hall, 60 Court St.
“We don’t usually expect high voter turnout, and that’s why we consolidated our polling places,” Magno said. “But we’re doing some publicity to make people aware of it.”
