LEWISTON – A high-speed chase ended late Sunday with the arrest of a Sabattus man.

Police said they arrested Daniel Chase, 42, of Sabattus, after he led them on a chase through parts of New Auburn and Lewiston, ending with a foot pursuit off Old Lisbon Road.

Chase was charged with drunken driving, among other things.

“The whole thing lasted about five minutes,” said Jason Moen, Auburn’s deputy police chief.

They were hectic minutes.

Chase was visiting an acquaintance on Riverside Drive in Auburn when he was ordered from the home. On the way out, he stole a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer from the yard and sped away, Moen said.

The pursuit began around 9:45 p.m. when Chase sped past officers on Riverside Drive. Police spun around and followed Chase into town.

With a pair of Auburn cruisers following, Chase fled across South Bridge into Lewiston. He sped up Cedar Street and plowed into a snowbank at the top of the hill, where the traffic merges onto Canal Street.

When the cruisers arrived a moment later, Chase managed his first getaway.

“He backed up, bounced off a cruiser and sped away,” Moen said. There was little damage to the police car.

While Lewiston and Auburn cruisers followed, Chase raced up Lisbon Street, reaching 70 miles an hour as the road neared Lisbon.

Then, it was over.

With the two police departments talking with each other, Lewiston police managed to lay spike mats in the road, puncturing the tires of the Blazer.

The vehicle slowed and stopped on nearby Old Lisbon Road. Police caught up with Chase a few minutes later, as he left the disabled car and drunkenly tried to run, Moen said.

Chase was charged with eluding officers, reckless conduct, operating under the influence and operating after suspension. The latter charge is a felony, since Chase is categorized as a habitual offender.
