Editor’s note: Every day there are rays of light that shine into the lives of people through their neighbors, their co-workers, their families and even through complete strangers. This column is devoted to exposing these sunbeams to the light and offering readers an opportunity to share good news. We plan to occasionally offer up our own sunbeams, too.
Eye-catching beauty

In my last visit of many to the Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street in Lewiston, I have to say that the grounds, flowers, trees, planning and ground preparation, is nothing but an eye-catching picture of beauty, to say the least.

The good task in landscaping preparation reflects the hard work of many city employees with solid dedication to their profession.

To City Administrator Jim Bennett, Assistant City Administrator Phil Nadeau, Arborist Steve Murch, Lewiston Public Works, Parks and Recreation Director Maggie Chisholm, and all the crews, as the veteran responsible for having this park renamed the Veterans Memorial Park, I say with a heart full of appreciation: “thank you a million times.”

Caring community

This is in appreciation to the many local restaurants that made generous donations of gift certificates to the people affected by the fire on Penley Corner Road in Auburn on Sept. 12. I thank them for their quick and generous response. It is comforting to know that in times of great need, Lewiston-Auburn is a caring and responsive community.

One honest man

Recently, while getting into my car after shopping at a local store, my credit card fell out of my pocketbook. I didn’t realize it was missing until I received a telephone call late that afternoon from a man in Sumner. He said he and his wife were returning to Auburn the following day and would return the credit card to me.

Even though I offered to reward him for his kindness, he refused.

I can only imagine what could have happened if it hadn’t been for the honesty of that man. It might have been days before I used my credit card again, only to discover it was missing.

In this day and age, it is comforting to know that there are some very fine, honest people left in this world.

I just wanted him to know how grateful I am.

Flying high for helipad

Sometimes when you have a goal to reach, you need a helping hand. This is what we found out when we decided to build a helipad in our town. It will be for medical helicopters to land, in case of an emergency in the surrounding areas. We decided to have fundraisers to reach our goal, and we pitched right in.

Our latest one was a Chinese auction and the response was great. We wish to thank the many who came to help and especially those who came to buy. Your help made it a success.
