A man jailed in New Hampshire on fugitive charges stemming from two Lewiston bank robberies apparently committed suicide a week ago.

Michael Hehir, 21, formerly of Newington, N.H., was being held at the Strafford County Jail in Dover, N.H., according to the Associated Press. Deputy Sheriff Joseph DiGregorio said his death was an apparent suicide, the AP reported.

Hehir was due in Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn on Dec. 1 for arraignment on a count of Class A robbery.

Hehir and Richard C. Hamilton, 33, of Lee had been charged with robbing a Bank of America branch on Sabattus Street in April and again in May.

Hehir reportedly crashed and abandoned the getaway car he had bought through a classified ad that morning. That, along with failing to pay a turnpike toll, helped police track down the suspects.

Hehir appeared in court in Auburn in May, with bail set at $50,000 cash bail and ordered to stay away from any branch of Bank of America.

He was later taken to New Hampshire, where he was held on robbery and drug charges.
