LEWISTON – In Portland over the past couple days, tires on at least 42 cars were slashed by an unknown vandal. In South Portland, there were 22 cars with flat tires.

In Lewiston late Tuesday night, six vehicles parked in the Centreville Garage were subjected to the same treatment. Police said one tire of each of the vehicles was cut sometime overnight.

“We don’t believe it’s related to the issues in Portland,” said Lewiston police Lt. Mike McGonagle.

Investigators said all of the tire slashings at the Canal Street garage were on the same level. By late Wednesday afternoon, police were working on leads and speaking with potential witnesses.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call Lt. Don Mailhot or the available watch commander at 784-6422 ext. 202.
