LEWISTON – A Lewiston man accused of stripping naked, breaking into a Raymond home and molesting a young boy last week remained behind bars on Wednesday.

Derrick Coffin, 23, is charged with burglary and gross sexual assault in the Friday-morning attack.

Police said Coffin was wearing nothing but a mask fashioned out of a towel when he entered the home and sexually assaulted a 10-year-old boy inside.

Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion said Coffin, a Poland Spring Water Co. delivery man, had earlier stopped at the home to ask directions.

Dion said Coffin later returned to the home and forced his way inside when the boy answered the door. Police said the boy was sexually attacked but that Coffin was frightened away by the boy’s older sister.

Later, after the assault was reported to police, the boy was able to identify his attacker as the Poland Spring driver who had stopped at the home earlier. Investigators recovered evidence from the man’s truck and from a shopping center in Naples.

Coffin was questioned on Sunday and arrested. He was being held on $100,000 bail. Police were advising other families to remind children about the dangers of opening the doors to strangers.

“Stranger danger is real. It’s a concern,” Dion said. “I think this case highlights that. If your mom and dad aren’t home, you’re not home. Don’t answer the door. You don’t know who’s on the other side. We don’t want this tragedy repeated.”

In Lewiston, police were not familiar with Coffin. It was believed he had been staying in that city with a girlfriend.
