NEW GLOUCESTER – Strawberries, mashed and whole, embellished with thick piles of whipped cream lured hundreds Thursday to attend the popular annual New Gloucester Historical Society’s Strawberry Festival.

A long line of festival goers meandered from the parking lot and snaked inside the vestry of the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester. They savored strawberry shortcakes piled high with freshly whipped cream. Some chose strawberry sundaes made with locally made Hodgman’s Frozen Custard. The Berry Berry Good Band play old-time favorites.

Historical Society President Leonard Brooks said the turnout was strong for the big fund-raiser.

During the week, dozens of volunteers heeded the call to prepare for the feast, picking, cleaning, mashing berries and whipping cream and baking biscuits.

Gwen Jordan said she needed a break from her whipping chores. Planning Board members Karen Asselin and Jean Libby served the public and were joined by other volunteers and family members.

Digger Jones collected money while the Rev. Linda Gard handed out colored sticks to give servers the right order.

Long tables were filled with young and old.

Librarian Suzan Hawkins and her team of helpers launched a fund-raiser, raffling chances to win a quilt to benefit the Robert Leighton Sr. Memorial Gazebo fund.
