DURHAM – Police believe speed and improper passing caused an accident on Route 136 Monday afternoon that left a driver and his four passengers injured.
The accident remained under investigation late Tuesday, Androscoggin Deputy Sheriff Travis Lovering said.
Richard Anderson, 43, of Auburn, and Robert Dellabella, 27, of Lewiston, were listed in fair condition Tuesday night at Maine Medical Center in Portland, a hospital spokesman said.
Eric Beaulieu, 35, and Thomas Kazimer, 42, both of Lewiston, were treated there and released. The men were passengers in a 1989 Mercury Sable driven by Michael Waldo, 32, of Augusta. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.
Witnesses told police that Waldo was traveling north on Route 136 and was in the process of passing another vehicle when a 1998 GMC van driven by Michael Babin, 52, of North Yarmouth, crested the hill.
Waldo swerved to avoid the van, striking the left rear section. Waldo’s car continued out of control to the left striking two mailboxes before crossing the road, and striking trees near Deer Run Road, the deputy said. Babin escaped injury.
With the assistance of Durham Fire and Rescue, a portion of Route 136 was closed and traffic was rerouted for about two hours while Brunswick Police Department reconstructed the accident.
The Mercury, driven by Waldo and owned by Tina Donahue of Oxford, was totalled in the 3:45 p.m. accident.
