BRUNSWICK – The Pejepscot Historical Society announces a half-day workshop detailing how to research family genealogy. “It’s All Relative: Tracing Your Family History” will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the society’s museum and library, 159 Park Row.

The registration fee is $15 for members, $20 for nonmembers and free for children under 12. Advanced registration is suggested. Proceeds will support the Pejepscot Historical Society’s new research room. For additional information or to reserve a space, people should call 729-6606.

History day

AUGUSTA – Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap has announced that the deadline for submitting applications to participate in Maine History Day is Monday, March 14. Application materials and program details are available to students and educators online at www.maine.gov/sos or by calling 287-5791.

Maine History Day is an annual academic competition open to students in grades six to 12. Participants explore a broad historical theme by preparing papers, projects or presentations. The submissions are judged by a panel of experts.

The competition is organized through the Maine State Archives and conducted in cooperation with National History Day. Maine’s statewide competition will be held in Augusta on April 7, with finalists receiving awards and moving on to the national finals in June.

Forestry workshop

KENTS HILL – The Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance and cosponsors, Kennebec Land Trust and the Litchfield, Readfield and Wayne conservation commissions, will host a forestry workshop at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, for private landowners, foresters, town officials and land trust staff and members interested in integrating timber management and biodiversity.

Led by Robert Bryan, licensed forester and Maine Audubon forest ecologist, the workshop will review how landowners and foresters can improve or maintain wildlife habitat on their land while managing the land for recreation, timber or other personal goals. The workshop is based on Maine Audubon’s new guide, “Focus Species Forestry.”

Cursillo day

Seniors reception

AUGUSTA – The Maine Council of Senior Citizens-ARA will hold its fourth John Marvin Memorial Reception from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at the Civic Center. The John Marvin Memorial Award will be presented to Congressman Michael Michaud. A second award will be given to Vi Quirion, posthumously.

The reception is open to all. Tickets are $25 and $10 for members. Membership applications will be available at the door.

Writing conclave

WATERVILLE – Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, in partnership with Colby College, announces the 2005 conference for teachers of writing from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 4, at the college.

Baron Wormser will present a morning group session, “Writing Poetry from Prompts.”

The conference is geared toward junior and high school levels, but the curriculum is adaptable for teachers of all levels. Teachers will have the opportunity to network, learn new techniques and share information.

The Pacific Intercultural Exchange is looking for host families for high school exchange students who will arrive at the end of August for the school year. The students come from many countries.
