SABATTUS – Fire destroyed a garage and at least two vehicles, but a nearby home was spared in a late Tuesday night blaze on Jordan Bridge Road.

Nobody was hurt when flames tore through the small garage at 205 Jordan Bridge Road, officials said.

Neighbors said Connie Castonguay lives in the raised-ranch home roughly 30 feet away from the garage that burned. It was believed she was inside her home when the fire was reported about 10 p.m.

Fire crews from several area towns used portable tanks to pour water on flames that burned quickly through the small garage. One neighbor said there were two small explosions as the vehicles burned inside.

Firefighters kept flames from spreading to the back of Castonguay’s house, although parts of the home were singed. Flames were also kept from spreading to a wooden deck at the back of the house.

The fire scene is near the corner of Jordan Bridge and Lisbon roads. Bill Stuart, who lives on Lisbon Road, said his wife saw smoke rolling into the air just as they were about to turn in for the night.

“She didn’t see the flames, but she saw a lot of smoke coming up,” Stuart said.

An hour after the fire was reported, fire crews remained at the scene, dousing hot spots so they could begin investigating the cause of the blaze.
