In the end, “Survivor Vanuatu” came down to who lied best, and offended the fewest players in the process.

And by a 5-to-2 vote, jurors gave Chris Daugherty the million bucks.

Among those supporting Daugherty, 33, in Sunday night’s “Survivor” finale: Lewiston native Julie Berry.

In a tearful exchange before the vote, Berry spoke of her misplaced trust of Daugherty, who had promised his support for her only to vote her out of the game before the cut for the final four.

“I helped you as a friend,” Berry, 23, now of Gorham, told Daugherty. “You were the only one” she added, that she allowed to get in “a position to hurt my feelings.”

“I don’t understand how you had the gall to look me in the eye – why the story, so elaborate?” she asked of Daugherty’s deception as tears rolled down her cheeks.

Fighting to the last for every vote he could muster, Daugherty admitted that, “You looked out for me. I felt it was my turn to look out for you” as the vote that would send Berry packing neared.

“I didn’t play you,” he claimed, “I lied to you. I did you wrong. I’m sorry.”

The spiel worked. In fact it worked on all but Ami Cusack, a 31-year-old sometimes model from Lakewood, Colo., and Scout Cloud Lee, 59, a rancher from Stillwater, Okla.

Twila Tanner, the 41-year-old highway repair crew member from Marshall, Mo., got their votes and $100,000 as runner-up to Daugherty.

Vanuatu was “Survivor’s” ninth show in the series that has become the granddaddy of reality television. Another in the series is in production now.
