Twin City voters should double-check the location of their polling places before this November’s election, according to city clerks.

Ward lines in both cities changed this year, moving handfuls of voters from one ward to another.

Lewiston voters should receive a ward reminder in the mail this week, according to City Clerk Kathy Montejo. She finished mailing postcards to all 25,575 registered voters on Monday. The cards tell votes which ward they are registered in, and the location of that ward’s polling place.

“We didn’t want there to be any question, so we mailed them to all the registered voters,” Montejo said. Those who haven’t received a card by Monday should contact her office, she said.

Cities are required to balance the number of residents in their wards every 10 years. According to the 2000 census, Lewiston has slightly more than 35,000 people, so wards have to contain just over 5,000 residents each.

“That way, all the voters have the same representation on the council,” she said.

Downtown Lewiston voters should see the biggest changes. Voters who had to go out to the Elks Lodge on Lisbon Street will now vote at either the Lewiston Memorial Armory or the Multi-Purpose Center.

In Auburn, the city had to move two polling places. Ward 4 voters accustomed to voting at the Poland Road Baptist Church should now go to Fairview School, according City Clerk Mary Lou Magno. Ward 3 voters, who used to vote in the High Street Congregational Church, will vote in Auburn Hall this year.

Magno said the city also shifted some voters along the edges of the wards before the June primaries.

“If they didn’t vote in the primary, they might want to check with us,” she said.

Polls across the state will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 2.
