AUBURN – Mark Adams, assistant city manager for nearly a decade, has announced he will leave the position at the end of the month.
After participating in a historic era of city projects and turmoil, Adams said he has accepted a new position with the Maine Turnpike Authority. He will take over as director of human resources with that agency after leaving his current position July 30.
Adams has been an assistant city administrator for the past 20 years – the first 10 with Lewiston, the latter with Auburn.
“Throughout my career, I have tried my best to work hard, maintain honesty and integrity, be open, and above all serve the needs of the community,” Adams said in a prepared statement. “Auburn is a great community with a proud history, exciting present and promising future. I am proud to have been a part of it.”
During his tenure with the city, Adams has been involved in several key issues and projects, according to City Manager Patricia Finnigan. Among them, Adams was instrumental in the reconstruction of Court Street, construction of the new Hilton Hotel at Great Falls Plaza, the creation of Festival Plaza, Mechanics parking garage and the Center Street overpass.
Adams will be gone before seeing the completion of one the more recent projects he was involved in – the reconstruction of Auburn Hall, which city leaders will soon call home.
“I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to have worked on projects which have been lasting experiences for the community and for myself,” Adams said.
Adams also helped reorganize several city departments and assisted with the creation of the city’s Global Information System.
Before coming to Auburn, Adams was assistant city administrator in Lewiston. It was unknown who will replace him as Finnigan’s assistant.
“Although I will relinquish involvement in many of the committees that I have served on,” Adams said, “it is my intent to remain committed and involved in the community in new and different ways.”
