AUBURN – A man described wanted in two counties was arrested Thursday night after a chase through Auburn that ended at a construction site.
Jeremy McCaslin, 28, was arrested on numerous charges after he was stopped by police on Route 26 in Poland.
Auburn police had been searching for McCaslin throughout the day after learning that he was wanted on outstanding warrants.
At about 4 p.m., investigators received an anonymous tip that McCaslin was staying at a home on Boulder Road.
“We were doing surveillance on the house on and off throughout the day,” said Auburn police Lt. Tim Condon.
At about 8:30 p.m., police were notified that McCaslin was driving from a different address in Poland and that he might be headed to Auburn.
Minutes later, officers Terry McCormick and Chris Hatfield tried to stop the car McCaslin was allegedly driving on Hotel Road.
“We sent two officers to the area,” Condon said. “The suspect is known to run from police.”
A chase ensued, with police following the vehicle down Lewiston Junction Road and eventually, onto Empire and Plains roads.
Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputies joined the pursuit as the fleeing car reached speeds of above 75 mph, police said.
Roughly 15 minutes after it began, the chase came to an end when the driver of the vehicle came upon a construction area as he entered Poland. Officials said the driver of the car was forced to pull to the side of the road when he got caught behind a tractor-trailer driving up Quaker Ridge Road.
“Everything went picture perfect,” Condon said. “The chase ended and nobody was hurt.”
McCaslin was arrested on charges of eluding police, driving after having been declared a habitual offender and on warrants from Kennebec and Somerset counties.
Police said McCaslin has been wanted by probation officials for two years. McCaslin was wanted for crimes allegedly committed in the Skowhegan area, although the details of those crimes were not immediately available. Investigators who had been searching for McCaslin said he was accused of crimes that required he register with the state as a sex offender.
McCaslin was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail where he was being held Friday without bail.
Police were following up the investigation late Thursday, trying to gather documents they said McCaslin hurled from his vehicle during the chase. It was not clear what type of documents were recovered, although some proved to be tax forms.
