POLAND – A Naples man was killed Thursday morning after he lost control of his motorcyle and slammed into a mailbox and tree on Route 11.

Investigators said the 21-year-old was driving too fast when he crashed at about 7:30 a.m. near the Casco town line. Police were not releasing his name Thursday night.

“We want to give the family the opportunity to notify some of his other relatives,” said Androscoggin County sheriff’s Cpl. Rielly Bryant.

Bryant said the man was driving his Honda CBR-900 west on Route 11 when he skidded out of control.

The bike struck a mailbox at the side of the road and the driver was flung into a nearby tree, police said. He was dead at the scene.

The accident remained under investigation Thursday night by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.

Meanwhile, police around the county found themselves responding to numerous wrecks on Thursday as warm weather and sunshine greeted motorists.

Police in Lewiston were investigating a crash on Russell Street in which at least one person was hurt. In Auburn, police responded to a half dozen wrecks involving significant damage.

“Everyone seems to be speeding right now,” Bryant said. “I don’t know if it’s the weather or what. A lot of people are just driving too fast.”
