Dear Sun Spots: I am a 48-year-old single woman who has lived in my trailer for the past nine years. After working as a bookkeeper for eight years, I became disabled. My income now is very limited, and I fall in between getting assistance in many programs. I barely get by as is, but I need a new 275-gallon fuel tank, which is very expensive. It is very cold in my trailer and the winter cold has not even been here yet.
I’m desperate because I am having to face the fact that I may lose my trailer and do not even have money to find alternate housing. I have been praying faithfully that someone will be compassionate enough to direct me to the right resources or help me. This would sure make my holidays if I could get some help. Please, if anyone could help me in any way, I will be forever grateful. I can be reached at (207) 753-1596.- Desperate Disabled Woman, Debra Wilbur, Lewiston.
Answer: Sun Spots is very sorry for your troubles. With the high price of heating oil this year, she empathizes with you and your family. Sun Journal reporter Scott Taylor asked around and has learned that:
Lewiston’s General Assistance administrator Sue Charron urges you or anyone in a similar situation to contact Community Concepts at 794-4065 to schedule a HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) appointment immediately. They offer advice and counseling, and can say specifically how much aid a person is qualified to receive. Charron also urges you to visit your local municipal office and speak to the General Assistance office. It is possible you might qualify for local heating oil assistance.
You might also note the governor’s Operation Keep ME Warm program matches volunteers with Mainers who have pre-qualified for weatherization assistance. The program will rely on volunteer groups installing a package of energy saving measures in 3,000 eligible Maine homes during Dec. 4 to 12. Church and civic groups may also be interested in adopting a home in their own communities and installing weatherization- and energy-saving measures. Those interested should contact 800-452-8735 or log onto www.volunteermaine.org.
Dear Sun Spots: Would anyone out there know if and how I could purchase tapes of the old “Youth Cavalcade” shows? I believe they were televised on Channel 6. I’m specifically interested in shows from 1960 and 1961. If anyone could please help me, it would be greatly appreciated. – L. Laverdiere, Livermore.
Dear Sun Spots: Does anyone know where they sell the white Cheddar Cheese Doodles? All we can find are the orange cheese doodles, and we were always able to buy white Cheddar Doodles right up until a few months ago. Thanks. – M.K., No Town.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, try contacting Axis Natural Health Food Store, 250 Center St., Auburn at (207) 782-3348. It is possible they may be able to special order this for you. In addition, Sun Spots would recommend you check the health food aisles in both Shaw’s and Hannaford supermarkets to see if they carry this product.
