Dear Sun Spots: I went to school at Holy Family years ago. They had the most wonderful no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies. I was wondering if anyone had the original recipe. I have made similar cookies but they always come out too dry. The ones at Holy Family stayed moist or almost oily. As children, we would roll them up and eat them. I would love to share this cookie with my children! You can mail the recipe to Suzanne Grondin, 1 Whispering Surf Lane, Scarborough, Maine 04074 or e-mail to [email protected]. Thank You. – Suzanne Grondin, Scarborough.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, perhaps you and your family might enjoy the following:
No-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies. Ingredients: 1 stick margarine; ½ cup milk; 2 cups sugar; 1 cup chocolate chips; 3 to 4 tablespoons peanut butter, optional; 3 cups oatmeal; and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Method: Place chocolate chips, peanut butter (if used), oatmeal and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Combine the margarine, milk and sugar in a saucepan; bring to a rolling boil. Boil for 1 minute. Combine the hot mixture with the oatmeal mixture; stir well. Drop by spoonfuls onto wax paper.
Dear Sun Spots: I have drapes that need to be shortened but they have a rubber backing. Is there anyone who can tell me how to do this? – No Name, No Town.
Answer: Sun Spots is not clear on whether you wish to do this yourself. However, she corresponded with Larry Morin of Decorators Network who was more than happy to offer the following advice:
If you do wish to do this yourself, Morin would want to see the panels first to be able to best advise you. It may involve a simple re-hemming job that may or may not entail taking out the stitching of the existing curtains, then re-hemming at the desired length, assuming no lining is involved.
Usually there are standards for sizing the hem – but the amount of shortening and whether there is an additional lining would determine the deviation from the standards. I would also want to know what condition the panels are in, etc. Larry says he would be happy to walk you through this process, either by phone or in person. You can reach them via phone at (207) 784-1424 or at the showroom at 14 Highland Spring Road, Lewiston. The store is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
If you are asking for names of someone who can offer this service, Decorators Network can assist you here. However they will need to have a look at it first in order to quote a price.
