AUBURN – A Cook Street resident asked water district trustees for help with a problem with dirty water for the second consecutive month Wednesday.

Fred Carpentier asked the board to repair or replace an aging water main on Dec. 10. He returned Wednesday saying the problem with brown water persists. He told the board that comments by Superintendent Norm Lamie in December that the Cook Street main could be lined would not happen fast enough.

“I’m going to be having dirty water until June or July,” Carpentier said. “I’m paying for this water and I can’t even drink it. I’m having to buy Poland Spring water.”

He added that his wife is a registered nurse and her white uniforms have been soiled in the wash.

Lamie said trustees would consider Cook Street needs for capital improvements in March or April.

In other business, Lamie said the chloramination project has been successful. The project that went into effect Dec. 10 mixes chlorine and ammonia as a disinfection alternative to chlorine. Lamie said the district is now in compliance with state and federal standards.

This is the first quarter the district has not had to send letters to customers notifying them of violations. The cost of each mass mailing is about $2,000, Lamie said.
