AUBURN
For the first time in over three decades, 255 Edward Little High School seniors graduated in their own gymnasium.

Although the gymnasium wasn’t their first choice for graduation, or even their second, these seniors put the location controversy behind them to celebrate the final step in their high school careers.

Changing locations didn’t change the effects of graduation. Tears, shouts and laughter, along with the continual flashing of cameras, punctuated the occasion as the sea of maroon and white marched toward the stage on Sunday afternoon.

Commencement addresses presented by the top five honors students centered around the number three, which was chosen as the graduation theme for this year.

From a triple threat to the three basic flavors of ice cream, each speech addressed the individual graduate within the theme.

“To be a triple threat,” said third honor student, Katelyn Chabot, “is a status that exists in many different forms and many different subjects.” The triple threat Chabot spoke of embodied the power to love, serve and educate.

Another student focused on obtaining the ideal life experience. “The choices you have made are reflected in the individuals you are today,” said salutatorian Ashley Smith.

“The lessons I learned were not just in school, but in life. Everybody has something to give you,” said valedictorian Anna Eisenstein.

Eisenstein addressed the difficulties of being one of three siblings to her friends, family and fellow classmates. She stressed the importance of being an individual. “In the end, it is the identity of the individual that is important,” she said. “Choose your own path and your own definition. But most importantly, do it your own way.”

Celebration for the class of 2003 didn’t end with their ceremony Sunday. Project Graduation took them to the University of Farmington for an unforgettable night of music, games and friendship.

As the ELHS graduates embark on their journeys of self-discovery, they will forever remember the advice of Valerie Brown, a teacher and coach. “Be yourself, be happy, and follow your heart.”
