Do you like to go to garage sales and flea markets? Are you a master at picking up old, ratty pieces and turning them into beautiful works of art? If so, then you may be familiar with the process of giving metal pieces the look of age-old patina. If not, read on to learn how to give a piece patina.

To create patina, you need several supplies. These include:

• Primer

• Metallic paint

• Patina aging solution

• Green latex paint

• Paintbrushes and sponges

• Paint trays

Before you get started, you need to clean the piece, being careful to remove all dust and dirt from any crevices. Then you can prime the piece and let it dry.

Once the piece is prepped, you can start the process of giving it patina. To do this, follow these directions:

1. Apply a thin coat of metallic paint to the piece, using a paintbrush to stipple the paint into all crevices. Let dry.

2. Apply a second thin coat of metallic paint to the piece.

3. While the paint is still wet, dab the piece with patina aging solution using a sponge. Let dry.

4. Apply a third thin coat of metallic paint to the piece and let dry.

5. Dab green latex paint over the piece to create the look of patina. Let dry.

When you have finished, inspect the piece and make adjustments as needed. Don’t like a particular area? Paint over it and repeat the process outlined above.

Pieces with natural patina are not perfect. Keep that in mind while you are working and you are sure to create a masterpiece.
