Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon: panel on “Financial Exploitation of Elders — Don’t Let It Happen to You.”
One of the most prevalent forms of elder abuse is financial exploitation, which includes misuse of an elderly person’s money, assets or property; forcing signatures on powers of attorneys and other legal documents; forcing will changes; grossly overcharging for rent, personal items or services. The presentation will identify signs of financial exploitation and provide resources available to prevent and/or stop this form of elder abuse. Presented by Brianne Martin, Legal Services for the Elderly.
Panel on “Sexual Assault/Sexual Abuse — Yes, It Happens to Elders.”
Elders are vulnerable to sexual assault and sexual abuse. The session will focus on learning about those vulnerabilities, the impact on elders when sexual abuse or a sexual assault occurs, what help is available and what everyone should know to recognize and respond to the crime. Presented by Keri Myrick, outreach coordinator at the Sexual Assault Crisis Center.
Advance registration is required for the free workshops. Seating is limited; RSVP by Friday, Jan. 8, to reserve a seat. Coffee, tea and breakfast snacks will be provided.
