The Lewiston Water Department is installing meters in many of the large buildings of the city. Nearly all of the larger industries of the city have been on meters for some time, but not until recently was the work of installing meters in other buildings begun. However, good progress has been made and already over 50 meters have been installed. It is planned to put them in all buildings having more than four tenements.

50 years ago, 1960

A new corporation to handle the wholesale distributorship for the paint products of a Boston concern in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont has been set up by William V. Hood of Lewiston.

The new firm is Hood’s Industrial Products Inc. at 4 Washington St., Auburn, and is an expansion of another company owned by Hood at the same address, Hood’s Mailing Service Inc.

25 years ago, 1985

Porter D. Leighton, Maine’s only announced candidate for the Republican nomination for governor, will be the keynote speaker at a Lincoln Day dinner sponsored by the Androscoggin County Women’s Republican Club Saturday.

Leighton was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1978 and re-elected in 1980.

He resigned his position in spring of 1981 when he became the first person from Maine to join President Reagan’s administration in Washington, serving as a special assistant to the assistant secretary of the Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration.
