I am writing this to announce for the first time in my life that I am ashamed to be a Mainer.

The Portland City Council has adopted a resolution to stand against the president’s plan to disarm Iraq. On top of that, a state representative brought this same resolution before the Legislature in hope of having the state adopt this same stance. By the way, if this happens, Maine will be the only state to do so.

I believe these people are totally out of touch with reality.

The argument for disarming Iraq by force has become conclusive. Iraq poses a serious threat to international peace and security. The goal of Saddam Hussein is to have one giant Muslim state with Baghdad as the capital and “guess who” as the supreme leader.

Sound a little like Hitler?

How will he do this? Weapons of mass destruction. You know, the ones he agreed to eliminate in 1991 but to date has shown no proof of. He is in direct violation of U.N. Resolution 1441.

These legislators want the Bush administration to keep on with the status quo. Well, 12 years of this has gotten us nowhere.

Nobody truly wants war, but there comes a time when a stand has to be made before it’s too late.

I thank God we finally have a president with some backbone (remember FDR and Kennedy) who will make the tough decisions and make the world a safer place for our children and grandchildren.
