LEWISTON — Well-known local vocalists will perform a variety of Broadway tunes — from the inspirational to spiritual to just plain fun — in “A Taste of Broadway: Every Song Has a Story.”
The show, directed by Denise Marois, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Franco-American Heritage Center.
Singing will be Mitchell Clyde Thomas, Kristen Thomas, Anne Caldwell, Denise Marois, Greg Simpson, Thomas Lentz and Christie Desrochers.
The adult chorus includes Racine Bruce, Sadie Landry, Jacynthe Jacques, Linda Jackson-Washburn, Alycia Hawley, Ruth Burke and Amanda Caldwell. The children’s chorus is made up of Maria and Ahna Dostie, Julie Bruce, Cecilia Landry, Emma Jacques, Emily Burke and Morgan Penley.
“The well-known singer Barbra Streisand once said that she enjoys singing Broadway tunes because each song has a story. And in the selection of songs that we’ve chosen for this production, we highlight the fact that each song is a self-contained story unto itself,” said Marois.
As with many Broadway show tunes, there will be familiar themes such as reaching success despite obstacles, finding love in the most unusual places and everyone living happily ever after.
“There will be very familiar tunes and not-so-familiar tunes,” Marois said. Among them will be “Climb Every Mountain,” “The Sound of Music,” “Bring Him Home” and “Do-Re-Mi.”
Musical selections are from such hit shows as “Phantom of the Opera,” “Jekyll and Hyde,” “Oliver,” “My Fair Lady,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” “The King and I,” “The Fantasticks,” “Les Miserables,” “The Sound of Music” and “Carousel.”
“We put together this production to give local performers the opportunity to sing in a magnificent performance space,” said Dan Marois, narrator for the production and co-producer with daughter Katie Marois. Connie Cote is music director and Rachel Morin is handling publicity.
Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for seniors and students. They are available by calling 689-2000 and online at www.francoamericanheritage.org. The Franco center is at 46 Cedar St.
