DURHAM — A malfunctioning oil furnace was blamed for a smoky mobile home fire on Meadow Road shortly before noon Monday.

Fire Chief Bill St. Michel estimated structural damage to the 1983 home at $20,000, and loss of contents at between $3,000 and $5,000. The property is owned and occupied by Nick and Amanda Dorrington and was insured, the chief said. No one was inside the 14- by 65-foot home when the fire started.

The home was filled with smoke when firefighters arrived. The heaviest damage was confined to a master bedroom and a bathroom, but there was heavy smoke damage throughout.

Firefighters were at the scene for about three hours. A tanker truck and one engine from Lisbon Fire Department responded to the scene and Freeport Fire Department filled in at the Durham station.
