Less than one week after taking four of a possible six points from three of the top five teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Lewiston Maineiacs took to the road for a pair of games against the 17th-ranked team, the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

Advantage — at least after one game — Drakkar.

Baie-Comeau defenseman Jonathan Parisien netted a pair of goals and added an assist and the Drakkar scored three times on the power play, including twice in the third period, to skate away with a 5-3 win over the Maineiacs in front of 1,544 at the Henry Leonard Centre.

“We didn’t deserve to win this game,” Maineiacs’ coach J.F. Houle said. “They were hungrier on the puck. They were better than us. We had it tied going into the third period, and a couple of penalties cost us.”

Lewiston has won eight games against teams currently in the top six places in the standings, but has just four wins in games against teams in the bottom five.

“It just shows how there are no easy games,” Houle said. “Mentally, the guys need to prepare for every game the same way.”

Friday’s stings in particular because Baie-Comeau had lost eight consecutive games, and a victory would have solidifies the Maineiacs’ hold on the 16th and final playoff spot. Instead, the Drakkar snapped their skid and inched closer to Lewiston for 16th place. Lewiston holds that position with 43 points, while Baie-Comeau now is five points back with 38.

The teams traded power-play goals early in the first period, and even-strength goals later in the opening frame to get to the first break even at 2-2, despite the Drakkar’s 15-5 advantage on the shot chart.

“We were lucky to come out of the first 2-2,” Houle said. “We worked harder in the second, but we had a lot of chances to go way out in front, and we didn’t finish. We need to capitalize on our chances.”

Lewiston held its only lead of the game in the second after Jess Tanguy scored at 1:08 of the period to put Lewiston ahead 3-2. The Drakkar evened things up late in the period on Parisien’s second of the contest, and went ahead on a pair of early third-period power-play goals, one each from Marc-Olivier Mimar and Kevin Bisaillon.

The same two teams square off again Saturday. Lewiston next plays at home against the Montreal Junior on Tuesday.
