The identity of a Gray man who died Monday in a diving accident in Sebago Lake while trying to retrieve his ATV was released Tuesday by Cumberland County officials.

Steven Viola, 53, wasn’t breathing when he was pulled from the water by his friends just after 1:30 p.m. on Monday, according to a written release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Lifesaving techniques were used on Viola, but he never regained consciousness at the scene, Capt. Don Goulet said.

Viola was taken by Raymond Rescue to Maine Medical Center in Portland where he was pronounced dead.

He was a certified diver, Goulet said.

A spokeswoman at the Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Monday the cause of death was air embolism, with drowning. An air embolism is a gas bubble in the bloodstream that can stop blood flow.

Viola had been attempting to find and bring to the surface his ATV, which plunged through the ice last weekend. Authorities were unclear as to which day he lost his ATV and whether he had participated in a fishing derby at the lake over the weekend that was closed by officials due to thin ice. Several people, including a Maine warden, reportedly went through the ice on the lake over the weekend, Goulet said.

“It’s a tragedy,” he said.
