AUBURN — Doris Richards Cunningham, formerly of Augusta celebrated her 100th birthday May 12 at Schooner Estates, where she has resided for five years. Frank Proulx, marketing director, presented Cunningham with the Centenarian Club plaque during a luncheon with family, friends and residents.

Cunningham lived on Eastern Avenue, formerly Togus Road, for 79 years. She graduated from Cony High School in 1928. Obtaining certification, she began teaching in Chelsea schools in 1931, and was there for 17 years.

She taught in Augusta for 15 years, teaching in one-room schools and at the Farrington School. Children knew her as Mrs. Barrett, Mrs. Higgins and Mrs. Donovan. Extending her education, she attended summer classes, graduating from the former Farmington State Teachers College.

Cunningham retired in 1962 and married Clinton Cunningham, spending 26 winters in Florida. Following the passing of her husband she moved to Auburn in 1989 to be near her sister, Gladys, and family.
