JAY — First-graders taught math to parents and others Thursday.

Best of all, they had fun during the lessons in Lyn DiSotto’s and Terry Leclerc’s classrooms at the elementary school.

The students and their parents participated in “Marvelous Math Mania.” The idea is for students to teach their parents some of the games used to learn specific math skills, DiSotto said.

“The Everyday Math program uses a variety of games throughout the year, which help children to understand various concepts,” she said.

Students were teaching their parents “The Before and After” game that teaches number sequencing. They also taught them how to play “Penny, Nickel, Dime Exchange,” a game that teaches coin values and equivalencies, she said.

Another one was “The Number Grid,” which teaches how to use a number grid for adding and subtracting, DiSotto said.

“The students really enjoy these games and were happy to be able to be the ‘teachers’ to their parents,” she said.
