WELLS — It was all Hounds on deck Tuesday.
With the Lisbon softball team facing the win-to-stay-in portion of their season, the Greyhounds needed contributions from everybody on the road against Wells in a Western B preliminary game.
Lisbon got just that with a superb team effort in an 8-6 win over the Warriors.
“It feels great for us — especially coming in and thinking we were underdogs,” Haley Eck, a sophomore catcher, said.
Lisbon (13-5) pounded out 15 hits. Kyrstin Ramich had three hits and drove in a run while Shauna Riordan also had three hits. Eight of the nine Greyhound batters had at least one hit for Lisbon, which hadn’t won a playoff game since being in Class C. Lisbon advances to Thursday’s semifinal at top-seeded Fryeburg Academy.
“We didn’t make the playoffs last year,” Lisbon coach Mike Fortier, whose club won just three games a year ago, said. “Then we had the season like we did. Coming into an unknown and competiing, we hit the ball well, we pitched the ball well and played defense. It was an outstanding game.”
It was the bottom of the order that really made its mark. The final four hitters in the lineup combined for seven hits, three runs scored and five RBI. Down 4-3 after Wells had rallied in the fourth, Lisbon scored three runs to take the lead.
“We got great production from the bottom half of the order,” Fortier said. “They really hit the ball hard, and they kept things going for us.”
Eck had two hits, scored two runs and drove in a pair. Alexa Harmon had a pair of hits and an RBI while Chantel Bisson and Crystal Ingerson each drove in a run with a hit.
That was too much for Wells (9-8) to answer. Though the Warriors had 10 hits, led by Abby Fenstermaker with four, Lisbon’s pitching and defense was solid enough to get the job done. The Greyhounds got some fine plays in the field from Ramich at first, Amber Cloutier at second and Riordan’s diving catch of a liner that ended the game. Sophomore pitcher Kimber Morse pitched well, hit spots nicely and stayed composed in her first tourney start.
“She stayed ahead in the count,” Fortier said. “She only got behind a few times. She threw strikes and made them put the ball in play.”
Lisbon had built an early 3-1 lead when Eck tripled in a run in the second and scored on a Harmon hit. Riordan scored on a wild pitch in the third to make it 3-1.
In the fourth, the Greyhounds struggled. Wells pounded out five hits and took advantage of two errors to take the 4-3 lead. Two runs came in on errors and Bri Smith singled in Fenstermaker for the lead run.
“It made us work hard,” Eck said. “It made us want it more. We felt fire, and we wanted to win.”
In the fifth, Lisbon answered right back. With one out, Ramich doubled and scored on an Eck single. After the second out, Bisson singled in a run, and Ingerson followed with another RBI single to make it 6-4.
“It felt great because it helped us believe like we could win,” Eck said. “We felt like we could secure this one.”
Lisbon added two more in the sixth when Brooke Lawrence scored on an error, and Ramich singled in Riordan. The Greyhounds needed both runs as Wells tried to rally in the seventh. Jill Sledzieski and Fenstermaker each singled in runs and had the tying run at the plate when Riordan’s diving catch ended the threat.
“That (fourth inning) could have been an easy moment for us to hang our heads because we made some mistakes in the field, and they came back and took the lead,” Fortier said. “The girls are strong. They’re motivated, and they want to continue this and see what they can do.”
