OXFORD — The eight member towns of the Oxford Hills School District voted 3,607 to 1,121 Tuesday to approve a $33.9 million budget.

Otisfield reported a 347-121 vote to affirm the budget and Hebron reported a vote of 221-64.

Paris voters gave the go-ahead to the budget with a 763-227 vote; Harrison, 522-172; West Paris, 262-84; Waterford, 160-54; Oxford, 621-211; and Norway, 861-215.

It was the second of a two-part approval process to reaffirm the new fiscal year budget, which begins on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2011.

Last week, voters unanimously approved the $33.9 million school budget. Only 55 voters from the eight towns in the school district were present at the town-meeting style budget hearing to approve the 17-article warrant, which included the school’s operating budget.

The budget is an almost $2.3 million reduction from the current fiscal year budget.

Superintendent Mark Eastman said late Tuesday night that he believed voters recognized that the Board of Directors had developed the most cost-effective budget during tough economic times.

Voters also agreed by a vote of a 4,537 to 1,317 to keep the current two-step budget approval process in place.
