NEW SHARON — The summer reading program at the Jim Ditzler Memorial Library will kick off with a family concert. Martin Swinger will perform at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 22.

Swinger has been singing and writing songs since elementary school and has performed music and theatre professionally for 30 years. He has national songwriting and performance awards to his credit and is a well-known and much loved personality and family entertainer in schools and festivals.

He has appeared on cable television throughout Maine and is also a music educator for children and adults. He tours across New England, to Kentucky, Georgia and Texas, but enjoys calling Maine his home. Swinger will perform singalongs, familiar and new songs and stories.

“Make a Splash – Read!” is the theme of the reading program and children will explore the world of water and water fun. Other events will include exploring the “Wonders of Water” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 24; children will have “An Ocean of Fun” from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 29; and “Splish Splash Summer” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 1.

The summer reading program will run through Aug. 28 and children may register for the program with the librarian. Those who complete each step of the program will earn prizes. This program is for children 12 and under.

Area teens are also invited to participate in the teen reading program through Aug. 28. Teens who sign up to read a number of pages or books and achieve their goal will receive a movie pass. All programs are free of charge.
