RANGELEY — Chicago’s traditional Irish band BUA will play Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 20-22, at Lakeside Theater, Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage and Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, respectively.

A quintet, whose name is taken from the Irish Gaelic word for victory, has been described by Irish Music Magazine as “the essence of a superb band.”

At Bua’s instrumental heart is Chicago-born fiddler Chris Bain, who picked up his uncle’s fiddle at a young age. He grew up in a musical household that often played host to touring bands from Ireland and the United Kingdom. In 1997, he left for a year at the University of North Wales. Influenced by fiddlers of the Sligo and Donegal styles, Bain’s personal approach is also a reflection of the colorful mix of traditions and musicians that surround him in Chicago’s scene.

Sean Gavin’s driving style on flute and uilleann pipes clearly reflects his immersion in Irish music from a young age. Born in Detroit to Co. Clare fiddler Mick Gavin (an inductee to the Irish Traditional Music Hall of Fame), he received tutelage from Scariff flautist Leo MacNamara and the late piper Al Purcell.

Jackie Moran, born in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, immigrated to Chicago with his family when he was 10. A sought-after bodhran player, Moran has toured with Riverdance, the Trinitiy Irish Dance Company, the Drovers and Ensemble Galilei, and has recorded with many of today’s greatest traditional Irish musicians.

Hailing from Minneapolis, Minn., Brian Miller’s tune backing and song accompaniments have earned him a solid reputation as one of the best guitarists on the scene today.

Brian O hAirt’s evocative voice stands as another hallmark of Bua’s unique sound. He is the youngest and only American to become a champion All-Ireland singer. His singing has been featured on radio programs in Ireland and the United States.

Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Lakeside and Skye, and 7:30 p.m. at Unity. There will be a preshow jam session 45 minutes prior to curtain at Skye and Unity.

Tickets at Skye and UCCPA are $10; at Lakeside Theater, they are $12.50 in advance (at the theater or www.rangeleymovies.com), $15 at the door.
