LEWISTON — On Thursday, July 22, Celtic and maritime music will be in the air at Fountain Park, courtesy of The Squid Jiggers, a fledgling duo made up of seasoned musician-entertainers Dave Rowe and Troy R. Bennett.
Their unusual name comes from the A.R. Scammell song “Squid Jigging Ground,” a musical depiction of fishing for squid in waters off Newfoundland.
Rowe grew up learning the musical trade literally at the feet of his father, Tom, who traveled the country playing bass guitar with Schooner Fare. Dave began playing professionally as a bassist at age15. In 1993, the Rowe men formed a duo that became Turkey Hollow when Denny Breau joined them. When the elder Rowe died in 2004, Dave formed the Dave Rowe Trio, with which he continues to tour with as lead vocalist and guitarist.
With The Squid Jiggers, Rowe has come full circle, picking up his dad’s trademark bass guitar and playing many of the songs he heard Schooner Fare perform many years ago.
“It’s a lot of fun getting into these old songs that are so much a part of who I am as a musician,” said Rowe.
Bennett started out in music playing and touring with the Irish band Rakish Paddy from the Portland area. He traveled throughout Europe with a guitar for awhile, busking on street corners for cash. Upon his return to the States, he started a Celtic duo called Bailey’s Mistake as well as the Half Moon Jug Band, a high-energy folk group specializing in new uses for kazoos and banjos. The Half Moon Jug Band continues to tour New England.

The free concert, part of L/A Arts’ Music in the Parks series, will begin at noon and last about an hour. Fountain Park is the courtyard next to DaVinci’s Eatery, off Chestnut Street. Rain location: Franco-American Heritage Center, 46 Cedar St.
